I'm starting a project with my kids that originated with the Cub Scout award, "World of Sound," in which you create 3 musical instruments from around the world. This Cub Scout project got me thinking, "why stop there?"
How cool would it be to learn all about cultures from around the world? Their customs, their music, their dances, their stories, their history, their food! So, I'm starting what will likely amount to a yearlong endeavor of teaching my twin sons all about cultures from around the world. I like titling these sorts of projects, so I’m calling it “World Culture Tour 2018”.
I'm going to journal, blog, photojournal, video, etc along the way.
My categories, per culture, include movies, food, music, folk tales/fairy tales, and dances and/or customs from each area. With movies, specifically, I hope to include a range, from animated movies based in that area to some that show more "real world", no sugar coating, along with nature films and history documentaries.
In most regions, I intend to even throw in some popcorn flicks, such as Anaconda, Howl's Moving Castle, or Monster Hunt. American Werewolf in London? Why not.
We'll cook recipes which each area is known for, listen to traditional and popular music, and so on and so on...as long as it's "from or about that area". For example, we're starting in Africa, because that's where the Cub Scout badge started, and my movies range from Lion King to Beasts of No Nation (censoring the really graphic parts for my boys, of course). The food planned for this first stop includes joloff rice, peanut soup, fried plantains, and fufu.
I've planned out quite a bit already, but as I get to different areas around the world in this project, I would love to hear others' suggestions of things to add.
Wish me luck!
