World Culture Tour: Indonesia part 1 - Sate Ayam

Updated: Sep 25, 2020

For our Indonesian stop, we decided to make sate ayam, or peanut/soy sauce covered chicken skewers. They turned out kind of amazing and may have just entered into our list of recurring recipes!

Sate Ayam

Ingredients

  • 1 pound boneless chicken strips, cut into 1/2-inch pieces

  • ¾ tspn salt

  • 1 pinch ground white pepper

  • 1 Tbsp sunflower seed oil

  • 1 cup water

  • 5 Tbsp peanut butter

  • 1 Tbsp brown sugar

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • ½ tspn salt

  • 1 Tbsp lime juice

  • wooden skewers

  • 2 Tbsp kecap manis (sweet soy sauce)

We couldn't find kecap manis for sale at stores in our area, so we next had to jump into the recipe to make that.

Kecap Manis

  • 1 cup soy sauce

  • 1 1/4 cup brown sugar

  • 1 tablespoon molasses

  • 3 cloves garlic, peeled and halved

  • 2 inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and quartered

Put all the kecap manis ingredients in a saucepan and boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium and let simmer to 15 minutes so the sauce has time to thicken.

On to the steps to make the Sate Ayam:

Instructions:

  • Combine chicken, 3/4 teaspoon salt, white pepper, and oil in a bowl. Cover and refrigerate for 2 hours.

  • Soak wooden skewers in water to prevent burning during cooking.

  • Bring water, peanut butter, kecap manis, brown sugar, garlic, and 1/2 tspn salt to a boil in a small saucepan. Then, stir to combine. Remove from heat and add lime juice.

  • Thread marinated chicken onto skewers. Set about 2 tablespoons peanut sauce aside in a small bowl and brush the sauce in the bowl over chicken.

  • Heat a grill pan or large skillet over medium-high heat. Arrange chicken skewers in batches on grill pan and cook until chicken is no longer pink in the center, 1 to 2 minutes per side. Serve skewers with remaining peanut sauce from the saucepan.
