STORY TIME

Reading to your kids as often as you can promotes a love of reading and learning in your kids, plus it doubles as together time. We read and show picture books to them, and I've heard it helps children for you to scan the words of the books with your finger as you read it out loud so that your kids can see the words as they hear them. Lately, even though the boys aren't ready to read chapter books by themselves yet, we've begun reading a chapter or two out loud to them each day leaving them with cliffhangers until the next day. It really keeps them interested. We are still throwing picture books into the mix too, though. For a list of good books for kids of varying age, go to the "Books" dropdown under "Dad Tips" on this site.

Libraries also have fun, interactive storytimes that your kids will enjoy, that include stories, dancing, and other types of fun. If it doesn't fit your schedule because most libraries only offer this sort of thing during the typical 8-5 work day, submit a request for a regular Saturday storytime. The two libraries I've asked have both been willing to add this to their schedule.

Sometimes, we can combine a fun activity with a book in a sort of theme, like the pictures below.

Crafts with Books

Very Hungry Caterpillar

Eric Carle's classic can easily turn into a fun afternoon

by creating the hungry little guy out of play dough

and straws!

Green Eggs and Ham

Snack time goes well with Story time. Surprise and amaze your children by giving them some green eggs and ham to eat while you read. Your little ones may think it's weird, but the eggs taste normal. Just add a bit of green dye while scrambling.

Story Time at the Library

Many librarians really get into reading to young children. They add voices to the characters and often read with a lot of enthusiasm that really gets the kids into it. Making an outing to your local library is a fun and educational way to get out of the house!
