World Culture Tour: Korea part 4 - The Military March

Updated: Sep 25, 2020

North Korea has a level of pomp and circumstance with its military that is not often seen anywhere else in the world. Therefore, with our final Korean stop in the World Culture Tour, we decided to take a swing at recreating the marching style of the North Koreans.

Boys trying to military march

North Korea has enormous military parades with bright colors, tanks, jeeps, and plenty of marching. Sure, I'm guessing the goal of the parades is to convey the might of their military, but the march itself is so unique and elegant, it catches the eyes of any that see it. The soldiers' legs move stiffly but quickly as with most militaries throughout the world, but they add in kind of a bounce to their steps that is more reminiscent of the Rockettes. The end result is a unique ceremonial spectacle.

The only comparable military fanfare with which I'm familiar is that of the Queen's Guard in England. Both are grandiose, but the Queen's Guard isn't normally seen in giant parades with hundreds of people. So, the military marches of North Korea stand out.

I'm sure the actual soldiers have a lot of training to get their march just right and synchronized with one another. My boys on the other hand, with their sixty seconds of prep, completely fell apart. Hilariously.

So, as you see, they didn't quite pull off the ceremonial grandeur that the North Korean military does. They had fun trying though! If you want to see what the march is actually supposed to look like, check out this video found on YouTube:
