For our first foray into the land of Greece, we decided to jump right into the food of the land. Now, we often make and cook our own foods from foreign lands as part of this World Culture Tour so that our kids can learn cooking different things from recipes around the world. However, there's a great Greek restaurant near our house, Mykonos, so we decided to get out and about and experience the Greek food on our list as made by authentic Greek people. This was not a mistake, the food was amazing.
One son ordered souvlaki (above). Forgive the picture showing only one skewer of souvlaki chicken, there were multiple skewers...they others just got grabbed before I could snap the pic! Our other son ordered moussaka. Moussaka is an eggplant dish with ground beef and, where we ordered it, comes with a sauce like marinara.
My wife ordered spanakopita, which is a Greek spinach pie.
I ordered gyro. I had always thought a "gyro" was the sandwich itself, the rolled up pita bread with meat in it. Apparently, it's the meat itself, which traditionally was lamb and has grown to include pork, chicken, or a mix of lamb and beef over the years. I'm pretty sure I got the mix because I don't think my meat was just beef... I do know it was good though! We got to play the fun game of "how do you pronounce this" before ordering.
We then mixed and swapped all around the table so that everyone got to taste everything. Granted, the vegetarian wife doesn't get a great sampling, but what can you do? For an appetizer, we ordered fried zucchini.
Lastly, for dessert, we ordered baklava of course!
Naturally, with all this food, we had leftovers for days!
