World Culture Tour: China part 6 - Snacks

Updated: Aug 12, 2019

Chinese Snacks

As with some of our other World Culture Tour stops, we sought to find snacks that the locals might eat. We ordered Worldwide Treats' Taste of Asia snack mix. It comes with snacks from China, Japan, Korea, and other countries of Asia.

As usual, the pack was a really cool mix of various snacks. The issue we ran into is that there wasn't much in the box from China. I know there's a different mix in every box, so other orders may come with more Chinese snacks, but ours was predominantly filled with items from Korea and Malaysia. These snacks will be really helpful in our planned Southeast Asia stop, but no so much for China.

So, I Googled "Chinese snacks" and hit Amazon.

We ended up ordering three separate snacks known to be very popular in China.

First up was the White Rabbit Creamy Candies, which looked like white tootsie rolls that were vanilla-flavored. Also, after the wrapper was removed, they were wrapped in rice paper. Initially, I had no idea what was going on. I thought maybe it was a second wrapper. Instead, though, this second wrapper was rice paper and is meant to be eaten.

Our second snack was Want Want Big Shelly Shenbei Snowy Crispy Rice Cracker Biscuits. Weird name, yes. However, these things were so very tasty. Anyone who's reading this that remembers Honey Smacks, these were cookie size and tasted just like them!

Third, we got some Chinese beef jerky. Weilong Latiao Spicy Gluten. Spicy is definitely an appropriate descriptor! Though quite spicy, that wasn't the entire issue that kept much of our order uneaten. The beef jerky had a strange taste. I'm sure it's all in what you're used to. The Chinese love it after all.
