On to our German stop of the World Culture Tour. It has been a while since we've had to delve into tough topics with the boys on this tour. Unfortunately, due to Germany's troubled WWII history, there are a couple of movies on the list that we may not make it all the way through. We'll see...
As our first German activity, we had bratwurst, potato salad and sauerkraut!
As with the "realness" that certain movies provided during our African, Middle Eastern, and Australian stops, Germany has movies that delve into WWII, of course, and specifically concentration camps. Our first movie on this topic, and maybe last, was "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas." Heavy stuff. Similar to "Beasts of No Nation", which we watched MOST OF while on our African stop, I feel the movie really hits home with my boys because of their similarity in age with the main characters. It's tough to watch, but it shows the insanity people can do simply because they think others are different. I'd like to believe that having that concept presented to my boys in a way that shows it's absolutely wrong will help them grow to be accepting, open-minded adults. That's the hope anyway.
