Scoutpocalypse: A Movie

My boys are in the Cub Scouts, currently at the rank of Webelos. One of the elective badges they were interested in is called “Movie Making”. So, we decided to make a movie! The requirements are that the movie has to be about scouting.

The movie couldn’t be “cheesy” though, per the boys. So, they wanted to step it up a bit.

They love sci-fi.

So when writing began, we all wanted to do a sci-fi scouting movie. How do you tie the two concepts together? Yeah, that’s difficult. It’s really difficult if you’re working with no budget! You can’t really go hiking on Mars with no special effects.

Stuck on Earth, no possibilities of space travel in sight. What’s a cub to do? Destroy the world of course. After all, a post-apocalyptic movie requires much less in the way of budget if you take the time to do some good location scouting.

Location scout…cub scout, either way “scout” is in the name!

With the theme in mind, we began the script. In the biz, they call this “script development.” We put our post-apocalyptic world into a scenario where the world had been destroyed by nuclear war, global warming, … and “the Pudding Wars of 2031.”

It’s called “Scoutpocalypse”!

Not many people are left in this world. So… bonus, no other cast members needed!

In the “film,” the boys struggle to survive and search for a safe place to live. Somewhere where there is still “green”. This is Mad Max style talk for plants, of course. So, they hike. They help each other. They avoid danger.

Spoilers Ahead:

They find some “green” by a creek, set up camp, and decide to start rebuilding society by following the ways of scouting.

The movie was a BLAST to make!

My boys giggled so many times as they flubbed their lines or looked directly at the camera. Naturally, we decided it’d be best to include a blooper reel after the credits.

I am nowhere near a good editor, but we had fun. My boys, at least, love the final product!
