Dirt Cake

Dirt cake

Making a dirt cake is an activity that can be enjoyed year-round but feels like it’s intended to be a fun spring activity. Bonus, it also tastes great!

Dirt.

That’s what ties this edible activity directly with springtime, the planting season! So, when you’re making your dirt cake, keep that in mind. It’s really the presentation that sells it. Add gummy worms to have “worms” crawling around in your “dirt.” You can also put your servings in flower pots with fake flowers as decoration. I’d advise clean, never before used flower pots. But, to each their own.

Kids love helping out in the kitchen, and this recipe is one they can really get in and get their hands “dirty”. Really, it’s ideal for kids to help out with this one because it’s a very simple recipe that mostly involves stirring…and crushing Oreos. What kid wouldn’t love some of that action?!

Ingredients:

1/2 cup butter

1 8oz Cool Whip container.

1 WHOLE PACK of Oreos!!

1 8oz pack of soft cream cheese

2 packs of instant vanilla pudding mix

1 cup powdered sugar

3 cups milk

Making your Dirt Cake.

1: Crush those cookies! Assign that to the kids and really let them go to town. You can crush them with a rolling pin…sure. You can also cover them in plastic wrap and take a hammer to them! If you choose the hammer route…and I did…be careful with the hammering enthusiasm you’ll get from your kids. If they’re too rough, they’ll break through the plastic and be splattered with cookie guts.

2: Mix all the other ingredients together, the butter, the Cool Whip, the cream cheese, the pudding mix, the sugar, and the milk. You should start with everything BUT the Cool Whip and cream cheese, adding them in separately once everything else is mixed together. Then, stir them all together until well mixed and thick.

3: Time to think about presentation. If you’re putting your mix in a flower pot (or multiple flower pots) or a big (hopefully see-through so the layers are visible) bowl, you layer your crumbs and mixture. Make sure you save enough Oreo crumbs to use as the top layer.

4: Accessorize. Add gummy worms to the top to make them look like they’re crawling through the dirt. WARNING: This grosses some people out! But, you don’t have to be a champion worm eater, trained by “How to Eat Fried Worms” to eat these worms. Come on! They’re gummies.

You could also add a fake flower or two to your dirt cake to look like they’re growing out of your delicious “potting soil”.

5: Enjoy!

6: Worry about the calories later…
