Likely, your kids will come home near Valentine's telling you that they need a box to take to school so they can put all of their Valentine's in it. It has to be big enough for cards and candy. Shoeboxes are suggested...but you are encouraged to be "creative".
OK, first of all, I don’t remember even having to take a box into school to collect all the Valentine’s I’d get when I was in school. But, the idea IS a good one and pretty cool to get the kids involved in a craft. So, I had visions of wrapping a shoe box in white paper and either letting my kids cut out pink and red hearts and tape them to the box or letting them stamp hearts on the box with red and pink paint. Simple. And, it would’ve been a craft that they could have heavily participated in.
THEN, I started seeing Facebook pictures of boxes other parents were making with their kids…needless to say, my little idea was weak in comparison! People make character boxes, boxes shaped like cars and tractors, boxes shaped like alligators and monkeys…whew! I had no idea. So, I set to work on this new concept of boxes, in which, my 5 year old twins weren’t able to participate a lot in… Luckily, each character they chose has a belt with a letter on it…so the boys got to add SOMETHING. While they love their boxes, probably more than they would’ve a heart covered box that they created, they would have done more of the other style themselves. So, I’m not sure society has moved in the best direction in this realm of crazy craft Valentine’s Day boxes. Shouldn’t the craft be something that kids can make on their own? I fell victim to peer pressure and made these because I didn’t want my kids to feel left out…
