Hello Neighbor: A Game Review

The neighbor trying to find you

Hello Neighbor is a mystery game that can get a little creepy. In the beginning, you’re a little kid playing ball in your yard. The ball rolls down the road until it reaches the neighbor’s house. When you go to get it, you hear screams from the basement of his house.

This is where it all begins!

The game is broken up into three acts which, translated to gaming, means three long levels.

In every act, there are puzzles that you must solve in order to get keys for the locks and keycard locks you run into along the way.

There are two problems you’ll face the whole time. You have to be stealthy so that the neighbor doesn’t catch you. He chases you throughout the whole game. Also, the game learns from what you do and stops you from doing the same things twice. If you sneak a certain path, for example, the neighbor sets traps or cameras along that path so that you can’t use that same path again!

When he does catch you, causing you to start over, you get flashbacks of the neighbor’s life. His wife died, and he built a cell in his basement to keep his son “safe”. There’s a prequel game called Hello Neighbor: Hide and Seek that tells more of the neighbor’s story.

Act 1

Having heard the screams from the neighbor’s basement, you go to investigate. You sneak and solve puzzles to get access to the basement to see if there’s anyone there.

If you’re successful, you get into the basement by the end of Act 1. What do you (or DON’T you) find there? That’d be spoilers!

Act 2

When Act 2 starts, you’re trapped in the basement, having gotten caught there at the end of Act 1. So, now you must use your puzzling and stealth to escape the house. Once out, it isn’t over. The yard now has a huge fence!

There are two ways to get out of the yard.

Way 1: Solve puzzles to unlock the gate.

Way 2: Find a way to jump on to the trampoline in the top right corner of the yard. Once on it, jump high enough to bounce over the fence.

Always keep in mind, the neighbor is looking for you, trying to recapture you!

Act 3

Years have passed. You’ve moved away. At the beginning of this act, you’re evicted from your apartment and move back to your childhood home. The neighbor’s house has apparently burned down during the time jump.

When you arrive, you go into your house, lay down on the sofa, and go to sleep. Suddenly, you wake up, you walk outside, and the neighbor’s house is back and even crazier looking! Another weird thing, you’re a kid again. Once again, you’re trying to get into the neighbor’s basement. This is all a dream sequence, but you must still stay one step ahead of the neighbor who, in the dream, is bigger and meaner than before!
