Things to Do in Georgia

*For Georgia's top yearly events, click here.*

Atlanta

Home of the Braves and the Falcons and Hawks and Thrashers, plenty of pro sports to attend. Atlanta also has what, until recently was the biggest aquarium in the world! The Georgia Aquarium is filled with every underwater creature you can imagine, animal encounters, plus they have dolphin Broadway-style musical shows.

Atlanta is also the home of the famous author of Gone With the Wind, Margaret Mitchell, and you can tour her house. Make a themed tour and go to the Oakland Cemetery where Mitchell is buried.

The civil rights movement has been immortalized with the MLK Memorial and the Civil Rights Museum.

And finally, Coca-Cola has an attraction in Atlanta where you can tour and see the history of the soda company, The World of Coke.

Columbus

The National Infantry Museum is located just outside the home of the infantry: Fort Benning. The museum covers over 230 years of military history!

Dawsonville

If you're ready for a backpacking adventure, this is a good spot for you.

You begin the adventure with a 5-mile hike to get to the Len Foote Hike Inn, which is a "backcountry" inn accessible only by, you guessed it, hiking in! The hike would be considered a moderate hike. It isn't too hard, but it isn't necessarily easy either. The Inn is nestled near the peak of a mountain, so the trail does encounter some inclines. Be sure to pack lite.

The area is beautiful, and there's plenty to do around the Inn. So, rest up from your hike in, then get out and explore the Inn itself. Each day starts with gentle drum beats to wake you up for coffee. Then, throughout the day, the meals fill you up and keep you energized to get out and see more.

The inn has the unique location of being near the Georgia end of the Appalachian Trail, in Amicalola Falls State Park, and near the peak of Frosty Mountain in the Chattahoochee National Forest.

The Inn is open year-round, so you only need to decide what weather you want during your adventure.

Savannah

Savannah is known for its history, which can be toured in places like the Mercer Williams and Owens-Thomas Houses. If the Mercer house looks familiar, it's because Mercer himself, and the house, were featured in the Clint Eastwood directed film, "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil." You can eat at world-famous chef, Paula Dean's The Lady and Sons Restaurant or go to the famous River Street and eat at any number of restaurants and pubs.

Stone Mountain

Complete with laser shows and a water park, Stone Mountain is the home of the giant monolithic "Stone Mountain" which is "a quartz monzonite dome monadnock." Not sure what that means? Join the club! It IS a really big rock with Civil War soldiers carved into it making it a small confederate version of Mount Rushmore.

Tybee Island

This is a nice beach to visit if you're near Savannah. It's very pretty, not overly crowded, and has a lighthouse! And, yes, below is a picture of one of my sons eating sand... In the language of the land, "bless him!"
