Fun Things to Do in Autumn/Fall

As the summer heat dies down and the cold from winter has yet to arrive, it is a great time to get outdoors and enjoy the moderate temperatures and all the fun that comes with Autumn. Just because the pools have closed up and the kids have returned to school doesn't mean family fun is over. There are plenty of fun Fall activities to get out and enjoy.

Leaf Viewing and Mountain Visits

With Fall comes the changing of the leaves. They're dying, sure, but on their way from green to brown, you'll see some of the brightest colors. Orange, yellow, red. Even better, the best places to see them are generally in the mountains. So seeing the leaves change means taking a fun road trip! While on your road trip, look for the bounties of Autumn on the sides of the road as places will be selling fruit jams and jellies, pumpkins, and apples.  I know it sounds a bit like Bubba Gump talking about his shrimp, but you can get apple cider, apple juice, apple jam, apple jelly, apple butter, apple sauce, and apple pies!

Football

Whether you're going to a game, watching a game on TV, or playing a game yourself in the backyard, fall = football.  It's great fun to take your kids to their first game...as long as they can sit through a whole game without getting bored! The fun doesn't stop there, though. Football is also the time for tailgating. So, get your chips, chili, wings, and start your slow cooker because it's time for some good food!

Corn Mazes

As the weather cools off and gets close to Halloween, corn mazes pop up all over.  It's great fun getting lost in the corn mazes trying to find your way! Depending on the corn maze, clues are given to help find your way, otherwise you just have to wing it and hope for the best. If you're familiar with the Greek myth of the Minotaur and its maze, you may know that if you hold your right hand to the wall and follow the maze, you'll get through it.  You'll go down dead ends, sure, but you won't go in circles.  Beware, though, some corn maze runners are hip to that concept and design their mazes to mess that concept up! Aside from the main draw of the maze, many corn mazes include other fun activities for the family like bouncy houses, playgrounds, corn pits, and hay bale mazes.

Festivals

Fall festivals are all over the place...well...during Fall of course.  Apple festivals, pumpkin festivals, art festivals, you name it.  Typically, these festivals have fun activities like crafts and art for sale, fruit for sale, live music, and kid activities like bouncy houses and face painting.

Fairs

When I think of Fall, I think of fair or football weather, because these events define fall.  Every fall a county fair comes nearby to pretty much everyone.  Rides. Activities. Shows. Petting zoos. Farm animal displays. Giant homegrown pumpkins!  There's something for everyone.

When you're done twirling and hitting the thrill rides, you can't miss the fair food. Ribbon fries, corn dogs, sausage, turkey legs, elephant ears, candy apples, ice cream, and cotton candy...not a lot of healthy options here, but you usually only hit the fair one day a year, so why not?

Haunted Trails

Many haunted trails are not for the faint of heart, but when you feel your kids are old enough, they can be great fun.  Sometimes, there's nothing more exhilarating, fun, and often hilarious as being chased by monsters!
